About Qi Steam Kitchen

Qi Steam Kitchen, located at 5966 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036, is a vibrant culinary destination that brings the authentic flavors of traditional Chinese cuisine to the heart of the city. This sleek and bright restaurant specializes in a variety of dishes, including Cantonese dim sum and an array of dumplings, offering a unique dining experience that sets it apart from other eateries in the area.

Established with a strong connection to its roots, Qi Steam Kitchen is part of a renowned restaurant chain from China, known for its authentic and primitive style of home-cooked steamed foods. This heritage is deeply rooted in the traditional steaming techniques that have been passed down through generations, originating from a village along the Yangzi River where steaming has been a culinary staple for over 4,600 years[4]. This rich history and commitment to traditional methods ensure that every dish served at Qi Steam Kitchen is not only delicious but also steeped in cultural significance.

One of the standout features of Qi Steam Kitchen is its specialization in Hubei cuisine, a region in Central China celebrated for its delicate seasoning and steaming techniques. This is particularly evident in dishes like the β€œPearl spheres” (珍珠丸), which are steamed sticky rice-coated pork meatballs. These dishes are crafted with precision to deliver a delicate and light culinary experience, complete with marvelous textural differences that delight the palate[1]. The accompanying steamed vegetables are equally impressive, bursting with flavor and complementing the main dishes perfectly.

Beyond its Hubei specialties, Qi Steam Kitchen also offers a diverse menu that blends Chinese, Taiwanese, and Cantonese flavors. This fusion creates a unique culinary experience that caters to a wide range of tastes. From traditional dim sum to innovative dumplings, every dish is carefully prepared to ensure that it is both authentic and comforting. The menu includes favorites such as Pork XLB, Scallion Pancake, Steamed Chicken Dumpling, and Crispy Chicken Dumpling, all of which are praised for their quality and flavor[2]. The restaurant also offers a variety of other dishes, including Mapo Tofu and Sauteed Baby Bok Choy with Garlic, showcasing its versatility in both traditional and modern Chinese cuisine.

Qi Steam Kitchen is not just a place to enjoy a meal; it is also a cultural hub that brings people together. For many Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) individuals and immigrant families, finding authentic and affordable food in gentrified areas like Los Angeles can be challenging. Qi Steam Kitchen fills this gap by offering a taste of home and comfort, using unique flavors that cannot be replicated with pre-made products. The restaurant’s commitment to using fresh ingredients and traditional cooking methods ensures that every dish is not only delicious but also a reminder of the rich culinary heritage of China[2].

The restaurant’s location in Carthay Circle, near Little Ethiopia, adds to its appeal by providing a convenient dining option for those in the area. With a 20-minute drive from nearby campuses, Qi Steam Kitchen is also a popular spot for students and locals alike, offering a welcoming atmosphere that is both modern and inviting[2]. The sleek and bright storefront is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to providing a contemporary dining experience while maintaining its cultural roots.

Qi Steam Kitchen is so good! We tried several items from the menu, including the chicken wonton soup, chicken xiao long bao, beef noddle soup, beef and vegetable dumplings, scallion pancakes, and pan fried pork bao. All were delicious and came out so quickly! It’s a small restaurant, but there are still several places to sit. There is a small parking lot. The server was very attentive.

Ordered the wonton noodle soup expecting thin noodles like the photo shows, but the noodles were much thicker. It also wasn’t very good. Disappointing overall.

We stopped here for lunch and the food did not disappoint! The bbq pork belly buns, pan fried pork bao and fried rice dishes were delicious, great portion sizes and cooked fresh to order. Excellent and quick service as well.

I loved it. The dessert sesame paste filled buns are amazzzzing. I would only suggest they ask you first if you want ice in your drink, because its brought with ice by default (like anywhere else here πŸ™„) and it would be nice to remind you that they could make it withouht it.

The food was great and I really enjoyed it all. It’s nice to see a place that has a special, like free red bean buns for dessert or a 13oz Thai tea. I really enjoyed it. The Singapore noodles were really good, and the pork xiao long was amazing as well. Scallion pancakes were alright but I would get again. Def coming back. Staff was very friendly.
